The Prospect Historic Hotel Bed and Breakfast Inn – Motel and Dinner House has become available for sale. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a Southern Oregon Icon. The hotel has been a part of the economic and social fabric of Oregon’s history since it was first built in 1888-89. This was the only lodging and dining establishment for many years along the Upper Rogue for travelers visiting Crater Lake. It began as a stop for people traveling from all over the world to visit Crater Lake, eventually becoming a Stage Coach stop. From its humble beginnings as a rough hewn timber building to its current status as an elegant, yet comfortable Bed and Breakfast, the hotel has been providing rest, relaxation and sustenance to weary travelers for over 130 years! Its reputation as a world class facility is known far and wide.
The Prospect Historic Hotel is listed as the A. H. Boothby House on both the National and State Historic Registers and is featured on the state and national scenic byways. Crater Lake National Park is the initial draw for tourism and is a lovely forty-five minute drive away. Once travelers have discovered the region, they realize there is much more to see and do in the region, requiring multiple days to enjoy the sites.
The 5.6 acre property includes the ten room Bed and Breakfast Hotel, the fourteen unit Motel, the fifty seat Dinner House and gorgeous park like grounds. All of this is bordered on one side by Mill Creek, which leads to Mill Creek Falls and the Rogue River. There are numerous Douglas Fir trees, many pine and cedar trees as well as blue spruce and one amazingly tall Giant Sequoia which anchors the property on the front corner. It has long established water rights to Mill Creek.
There is a beautiful 2700 sf log house included which has three bedrooms and two baths. This has functioned as a manager’s residence but could easily be added to the rental inventory. There are numerous out buildings and a reliable and very pure well.
The owners have established strong partnerships with Travel Oregon, Travel Southern Oregon, The Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild, Crater Lake National Park and many International Receptive Tour Operators from all over Europe, Asia and Australia providing professional marketing representation all over the world. Prospect Oregon is nestled amid the Rogue River National Forest and the Umpqua National Forest, Sky Lakes Wilderness (over 200 lakes), the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness and BLM land, on the banks of year round Mill Creek and the Upper Rogue River. Crater Lake National Park, Oregon’s only National Park, is just 28 miles away.
There are 3 waterfalls just a short stroll from the hotel. Pearsoney Falls, located on Mill Creek, is a 20 foot tall, wide cascade under the canopy of the trees and is just 15 minutes on foot from the Prospect Hotel. Along the trail to the falls are markers identifying the local flora. Stay on this trail to the cliff view placing you 100 feet above the Avenue of the Boulders on the Rogue River. Car and room sized boulders were thrown here when Mt. Mazama blew up 7700 years ago. The mountain now contains the caldera in which Crater Lake was formed.
Less than a mile away from the Prospect Hotel is the trail to Mill Creek Falls and Barr Creek Falls. Mill Creek Falls (an Oregon state listed vista point) is a spectacular 173 foot plunge into the Rogue River. Just a couple of minutes further down the trail is the view of Barr Creek Falls, which drops a total of 240 feet. The top of Barr Creek Falls cascades 90 feet over boulders before splitting in two and plunging 150 feet into the Rogue River. From Barr Creek Falls viewpoint, if you look back up the Rogue River you can also see Mill Creek Falls at the same time. Two waterfalls at once!
The area once known for it’s tremendous proliferation of trees and hence logging is now a popular recreation area. The trees are still here and so is the logging though in a much more diminished aspect. The world famous Rogue River flows from its origin at Boundary Springs on the edge of Crater Lake National Park, through twists and turns along the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, one of America’s National Scenic Byways. One of the more popular and easy to visit attractions is the Rogue River Gorge, where the river has carved through the lava rock to create a natural gorge. As you walk along the Gorge where the river roars through the narrow passage you will oohh and ahh at the views from the paved interpretive path with signage to inform you about the natural wonders!
Just downstream is Natural Bridge, where the Rogue River disappears completely underground for approximately 200 feet through a lava tube. Natural Bridge also has a paved interpretive path. It gained it’s name because it was the natural bridge that the pioneers and Rogue Indians used to cross the river.
A short distance away is Rabbit Ears, a unique twin-shaped geologic formation created by a massive volcanic event over seven thousand years ago. It can be clearly seen from the highway.
The entire region around Prospect Oregon is well known for Hiking, Biking, Birding, Hunting, Fishing, Rafting, Boating, Camping, Horseback Riding, Snowmobiling, and Cross Country Skiing or Snowshoeing in Crater Lake National Park.
Just 8 miles away is Lost Creek Lake, Southern Oregon’s most popular recreational lake located on the Rogue River. Lost Creek Lake is known by the locals as a ‘Fish Factory’, and the world renowned fishing of the ‘Holy Waters’ below the dam for the fantastic trout, steelhead and salmon fishing. Lost Creek Lake also has great camping facilities, and a large marina with rental boats for house boating, parties, fishing and water skiing.
